About This Gemstone

Ethiopian Opal

Enku means jewel in Amharic, the root of Enkutatash, Ethiopia's New Year: the gift of jewels.

Gemstone Guide

Ethiopian opal comes from the volcanic highlands of Welo (Wollo), where silica-rich water filled hollows in the rock and slowly hardened into opal; the major Welo deposit near Wegel Tena was found in 2008. Each bead carries the colours of that earth: cream, honey, amber and russet, with a soft, milky glow. In Amharic, enku means jewel, the root of Enkutatash, Ethiopia's New Year, the gift of jewels. Legend says the Queen of Sheba was welcomed home with gems, and the stone is believed to bring hope and inspiration to the wearer. Enku. A gift worth celebrating.

Because every gemstone is formed by nature, each piece is naturally unique.

Product Description

Enku is a 42 cm choker of smooth Welo opal rondelle beads, 37.5 carats of natural Ethiopian opal from Wollo in cream, honey, amber and caramel. The beads have a soft, milky glow, and some flash play-of-colour as the light moves. A gold fish hangs at the centre, with a crescent moon and a snowflake charm on either side, all in 18K gold vermeil over 925 sterling silver. It closes with a lobster clasp and weighs 11.63 g. Opal loves water, so put it on last, take it off first, and keep it away from water, oils and perfume. The name comes from enku, the Amharic word for jewel,
