A green born deep within the earth

Unlike many coloured gems whose colour can come from trace impurities, peridot's characteristic green is intrinsic to its olivine chemistry, with iron playing the key role in its colour.

Its colour is not painted on. It belongs to the stone itself.

Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate that forms deep within the Earth. Much gem-quality peridot reaches the surface through volcanic activity, carried upward in basalt or related rocks.

Its colour range is relatively narrow compared with many coloured gemstones: yellowish green, greenish yellow, brownish green and, more rarely, a stronger pure green. Iron within the crystal structure is responsible for the colour.

Peridot has another unusual story: tiny amounts of gem-quality olivine can also arrive on Earth inside meteorites. Extraterrestrial peridot is extremely rare, but it is a reminder that this familiar green gem has a genuinely extraordinary geological story.

From ancient Red Sea mines to modern sources

Ancient peridot was associated with Zabargad (St. John’s Island) in the Red Sea. Today, important gem sources include Arizona, Myanmar, Pakistan and Vietnam, with each locality capable of producing material with different characteristics.

How to recognise Peridot

Peridot has a distinctive colour range, but colour alone is not enough to identify a gemstone. Professional testing is appropriate when identity, treatment or provenance matters.

Look for the characteristic yellowish-green to green body colour and vitreous lustre. Under magnification, some peridot may show distinctive “lily pad” inclusions — circular or disk-like features associated with fractures.

Study the colour

Peridot ranges from brownish green through yellowish green to stronger green. A pure, saturated green is comparatively uncommon.

04 — Rarity

The finest green is harder to find

Peridot is readily available in many jewellery qualities, but fine material becomes more selective as colour saturation, clarity and size increase.

Colour leads the story

GIA notes that the finest peridot is a saturated green without a hint of yellow or brown. Most material is more yellowish green, while pure green stones are comparatively rare.

Clarity also matters. Better-quality stones can be eye-clean, while prominent dark inclusions can reduce value. Larger stones with strong colour can command significantly greater value than standard commercial sizes.
