Look for the characteristic yellowish-green to green body colour and vitreous lustre. Under magnification, some peridot may show distinctive “lily pad” inclusions — circular or disk-like features associated with fractures.
Peridot ranges from brownish green through yellowish green to stronger green. A pure, saturated green is comparatively uncommon.
Peridot generally has a vitreous appearance and a relatively narrow colour range compared with many other green gems.
“Lily pad” inclusions can occur in peridot and may be useful gemological clues when viewed under magnification.

Peridot is readily available in many jewellery qualities, but fine material becomes more selective as colour saturation, clarity and size increase.
GIA notes that the finest peridot is a saturated green without a hint of yellow or brown. Most material is more yellowish green, while pure green stones are comparatively rare.
Clarity also matters. Better-quality stones can be eye-clean, while prominent dark inclusions can reduce value. Larger stones with strong colour can command significantly greater value than standard commercial sizes.
Green can be quiet. Peridot makes it unmistakable.
