Grandidierite is not defined by colour alone. Its blue-green appearance can shift with direction, light and cut — a quality that makes the stone feel alive.

Some gemstones are remembered for their colour. Grandidierite is remembered for how it moves.

Its most distinctive optical feature is strong trichroic pleochroism: viewed from different directions, the stone can reveal different blue-green and green tones.

That shift is part of its appeal. Rather than presenting a single fixed colour, the gemstone responds to the way it is cut and the way it catches light.

02 — Origin

A hundred-year gap between discovery and supply

Grandidierite's history reads less like a conventional mining story and more like a rediscovery — from its early identification in Madagascar to later gem-quality finds.

1902

First identified

French mineralogist Alfred Lacroix described the mineral from specimens found in southern Madagascar and named it after explorer and naturalist Alfred Grandidier.

1902–1960s

Near-disappearance

The original pockets were small and the mineral remained largely known through mineralogical and museum specimens rather than jewellery.

2004

Sri Lankan find

Transparent crystals were reported in Sri Lankan gem gravels, adding evidence that facetable gem-quality material could occur outside the original locality.

2014

Tranomaro deposit

A new source was located near Tranomaro in southern Madagascar, close to the original locality, becoming an important source of gem-quality material.

Today

A rare blue-green gem

Gem-quality, facetable grandidierite remains uncommon, with southern Madagascar central to the gemstone's modern story.

03 — Look Closer

How to recognise the real thing

Visual clues can help you understand a stone, but they do not replace professional identification. For valuable material, independent laboratory testing is the safest way to confirm species and treatment.

Grandidierite's colour, transparency and pleochroism can provide useful clues. Its blue-green to green appearance may overlap with other gemstones, which is why professional testing matters.

Rotate it under light

Genuine grandidierite can show strong trichroic pleochroism as the stone is viewed from different directions. This is a useful clue, but not conclusive proof by itself.

Look at colour and transparency together

Blue-green to green colour combined with appropriate transparency and optical behaviour is more informative than colour alone. Similar-looking stones can overlap visually.

Ask the seller to disclose whether the stone has been treated. For valuable material, treatment status should be supported by appropriate documentation where available.

04 — Rarity

Why it is rarer than most gems you know

The rarity is not simply the name. It is the combination of geological conditions, transparency, colour, clarity, size and the limited availability of facetable material.

The real rarity is quality

It only forms under a narrow set of geological conditions. Gem-quality material is exceptionally limited, and most recovered material is not transparent or facetable.

Quality is the real outlier. Transparent, clean material is far less common than opaque or heavily included rough, which makes provenance and independent identification especially important.

Availability can change quickly. Colour, transparency, clarity, cut, size and documented provenance all influence the material that reaches the jewellery market.
